Channel art, cover, and banner sizes: YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, X

Banners are cropped to a different width on every device. What matters more than the spec is the safe area that survives all of them.

The wide image at the top of a profile goes by a different name on each service: channel art on YouTube, cover on Facebook, banner or header on LinkedIn and X. They share one trait. Desktop, tablet, phone, and TV each crop it to a different width. So memorising one size is not enough; you need to know the central area that shows everywhere.

YouTube channel art is the hardest

YouTube takes one 2560x1440 image and crops it differently per device. A TV shows all of it, a desktop shows only a horizontal band through the middle, and a phone shows an even narrower band. The area visible everywhere is the central 1546x423 pixels — 18 percent of the whole. Channel name, logo, and upload schedule must fit inside it.

The other 82 percent is background. Leave it empty, or fill it with a pattern or photo that can be cropped without harm. The minimum is 2048x1152; smaller uploads are refused. The file must be under 6MB, and a 2560x1440 PNG with a photo in it easily exceeds that, so save as JPG.

Where the profile picture overlaps

On LinkedIn and X, the profile picture sits over the bottom left of the banner. On desktop it covers nearly half the banner's height, and anything placed there is hidden. Keep important content in the right two-thirds and the upper half. On phones the profile picture sometimes drops below the banner, but either way, leaving the bottom left empty is the safe choice.

Facebook covers narrow on phones

A Facebook page cover shows at 820x312 on desktop; on phones the sides are cropped to roughly the central 640 pixels. Build it at 851x315 and desktop uses it as is; for phones, keep the essentials inside the central 640x315. The 100 pixels on each side are background.

Rules that hold everywhere

  • Essentials in the middle. Every service crops from the edges inward.
  • Large type, few words. The banner supports the profile picture and name; one line is enough.
  • A background that survives cropping: a pattern, a flat colour, or a landscape that looks fine cut anywhere.
  • Check on a phone and a desktop after uploading. Previews do not always match the real thing.
  • Check the size limit. YouTube is 6MB; the others are more generous, but a JPG fits anywhere.
