Why profile pictures crop badly
You upload a square and the service masks it into a circle. Plan for the corners, and check the size it is actually shown at first.

Most services accept a square image and then mask it into a circle for display. The four corners vanish in the process, which is about 21 percent of the square's area. At 640x640, roughly 94px in from each corner falls outside the circle.
Fill the square with a face and the forehead and chin get clipped. Compose with some slack, assuming the circle is what people will see. Draw the circle inscribed in the square and it is clear: the middles of each edge survive, every diagonal corner does not.
It is shown far smaller than you think
A profile picture is large when uploaded and tiny when seen. In a chat list it is 40 to 50px, next to a comment around 30px, and even on the profile screen only 110 to 150px. Upload a full-body shot and the face is about 10px. Nobody can tell who it is.
- Crop so the face fills at least half the square. Shoulders up is about right.
- A busy background merges with the face once it shrinks. Flat or blurred backgrounds work better.
- If you add text, keep it to two or three characters, large, in the middle. Anything near the rim is cut off.
- High-contrast photos survive small sizes. A dark photo becomes a dark dot.

Uploading at roughly twice the displayed size is the safe choice. The service scales it down anyway, so there is no downside, and it stops the image looking soft on dense screens. Go much larger and some services compress hard enough to make it worse. 640 to 1080 is the sweet spot almost everywhere.
Where services differ
Accepting a square and showing a circle is nearly universal. What differs is the minimum size and how the full profile screen displays it. Messengers often show the circle in lists but the whole square when the profile is opened, so the square itself should look good too.
Few services publish an exact minimum. 640x640 is above any published requirement while the file stays around 200KB, so it works anywhere. Make it once and upload it everywhere.
How to do it
- Pick the Profile picture 1:1 preset.
- Turn on the circular crop guide under safe areas. The corners that disappear are marked.
- Adjust the crop so the face never touches the grey corners, and make it fill at least half the square.
- If the photo is not tall enough to make a square, fill the sides with a background. Do not scale up.
- Save as PNG. The service compresses again, so what you hand it should be clean.
